Kenny
Chosen to Assist State of Ohio on Election Day
Roseland, NJ, November 13, 2008
– George J. Kenny, a
partner with Connell Foley LLP headquartered in Roseland,
New Jersey, was one of a team of more than 30 senior
attorneys from across the country (and the only
representative from the State of New Jersey) selected to
receive training in Ohio election law and to work on
election day for the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections in
Cleveland, Ohio. The purpose was to ensure full voting
participation by residents entitled to cast ballots in the
recent presidential election.
As a
result of a chaotic situation in the state during the
presidential election of 2004, the Ohio Secretary of State
discharged the board and appointed four new members – two
Democrats and two Republicans – to restructure voting
mechanisms and reform the voter identification process.
Senior
members of law firms from around the nation were solicited
to assist by making decisions on behalf of the board, under
Ohio’s statutory election law, by advising and directing
poll judges and workers as to voting eligibility when
challenges were made at the polling site or when questions
arose regarding procedure. The day after the election, Ohio
newspapers stated that the additional governance resulted in
virtually problem-free voting and contributed to a minimum
of partisan challenges.
